Overcomer – Dee Coxon
What do you do?
I help women to get their business online in less time using my Fast Class: It’s a bespoke accelerated learning experience. Designed for beginners delivered in one day.
Growing up, did you always dream that you would be doing what you’re doing now?
Not exactly. I always knew I would be self-employed and have been since I was 18. To be honest that wasn’t about ambition. My younger self was rather buttoned up and a bit of a control freak so I just couldn’t have a boss.
What made you decide to “go for it” in terms of your career goals/ambitions?
Two things: As a former hairdresser and beauty therapist I’d worked in female-focused environments my whole adult life so I got to know women really well. Aside from my actual job I had a really intuitive way of helping my clients with all kinds of issues and they used to say to me ” you were born for this” until eventually, I began thinking I know what they mean. For me, the calling for a different kind of life began slowly until it reached critical mass, once it did I just had to jump.
Did you face adversity? How did you overcome that?
I lost my wonderful mum just as I made the leap and I was utterly broken beyond words. For a long time, I couldn’t focus and was without any direction until one night I read a quote by Rufus Wainright that said “You’re born twice once at your birth and again when your mother dies” and that was it. There was a herculean shift within me and it got me going again that same night.
A lot of women have these big goals & big ideas that they’d like to bring to life, what advice would you give them in terms of how they can make that happen?
Based on my hard earned experience along with vast amounts of wasted time and money my advice is: If you’re just starting out be honest about where you are. There’s no shame in being a newbie so don’t go for advanced level training or coaching right out the gate just because you like the look of the outcomes otherwise, you will always be circling back to fill in your blanks. Start small and scale up, it won’t work the other way around.
Know that: If you enter a market that’s too big or too loud for the amount of resources you have you’re going to get lost (Seth Godin)
Understand that: In this knowledge economy it’s not about finding something you trust it’s about finding someone you trust ( Tony Robbins)
Don’t wing it – plan it ( Dee Coxon)
More importantly, don’t let anybody crush your dreams. If you can feel it then know it’s real so find a way forward, be prepared to lose a few friends along the way and of course ignore your family when they say ” you must be mad”
What’s the biggest regret you have when it comes to your blog/shop/business?
Two things: When I first started out I didn’t get advice from someone who’d already done this. If I’d done that from day one I would have got a lot further a lot quicker.
And secondly I did massive amounts of study even up to Masters degree then I realized I only needed 20% of all I’d learned to set up, launch and run my business.
What’s been your proudest moment so far?
I am very lucky in that my proudest moment is a recurring one: When I sit face to face with a new client she’s usually sat bolt upright, to begin with, because she’s nervous, anxious and feeling a little vulnerable about sharing. Once we get about 20 minutes in, her shoulders drop, she relaxes back in her chair, her face softens and in that moment everything about her says ” thank god she gets me”. That reaction for me is gold and makes me feel both humble and proud.
And, just because we like our coffee around here, how do you take yours?
Ordinarily, it’s a skinny decaf white with a sweetener but my guilty pleasure is café con leche. I spend a lot of time in Spain and just love their coffee.
