What do you do? I run a website for moms that has a blog and a unique shop with items for mom, baby, toddler, and nursery. The blog is all about different obstacles of motherhood from pregnancy to birth to breastfeeding and beyond. The shop is a collection of several brands that are mainly started by moms!
Growing up, did you always dream that you would be doing what you’re doing now? Growing up I desperately wanted to be a teacher, and when that passed, in 4th grade I realized I wanted to be a hairstylist. Lucky for me, I was able to achieve that dream and I got my managing Cosmetology license before I even graduated high school, and I have been performing hair and skincare services for 10 years.
What made you decide to “go for it” in terms of your career goals/ambitions? After doing my main passion for the past 10 years my dreams started to become bigger but also different once I became a mommy. I have always been a creative thinker with art and other crafty projects and I really wanted to run my own business. After giving birth to my daughter Lily I struggled with severe postpartum depression and anxiety. This struggle led me to start a blog to get my thoughts out, which then led to opening my shop and turning the whole thing into a business.
Did you face adversity? How did you overcome that? I am still facing struggles now! Getting the word out about a new business is especially tricky! Reaching your “followers” and creating your brand is a task in itself and I am working on overcoming this now.
A lot of women have these big goals & big ideas that they’d like to bring to life, what advice would you give them in terms of how they can make that happen? If you have big dreams, you absolutely have to pray pray pray constantly. It also helps to have a wonderful support system behind you that believes in you 100% and can celebrate with you when you are doing great and to encourage you when maybe you are doing not so great. For me, I am so lucky that my husband is a huge motivator and allows me to follow my passions.
What’s the biggest regret you have when it comes to your blog/shop/business? I am not sure that I have regrets, but rather questions. Am I doing this right? Does this look good? How can I market this better? How can I approach this mom about what I am doing? However, my dad once told me that it’s better to have options rather than problems, you just have to figure out what is the best choice for you.
What’s been your proudest moment so far? Since starting this, I have been able to connect with so many incredible other mothers and women. It is so rewarding when moms who are struggling reach out to me for help or tell me that what I wrote really helped them get through the day. In regards to the shop portion, I love that I get to showcase other businesses started by moms just like myself, and I like that other moms appreciate what I am trying to achieve.
And, just because we like our coffee around here, how do you take yours? I actually do not drink coffee – not one bit! I have whats called ventricular bigeminy, and if I have caffeine I get horrible heart palpitations. I would love to say I enjoy the taste of coffee even, but I just do not! Yuck! I can say though that my tea collection is pretty massive, and I will sit down and have a hot cup of detox tea any day of the week with you.
I believe in the story of the overcomer. That has been my story and I believe that is your story too. We want your journey here on the blog to help encourage others just like you and me. If you’d like to share that with us, please come over and share your story with us!
