Overcomer Series with Brittany Wise
What do you do?
I am full-time engineer by day and practically a full-time blogger in the evenings at Our Home Made Easy. I love sharing ideas on really easy projects that anyone can accomplish. And I am passionate about taking ideas and breaking them down into easy steps that my readers understand and feel empowered to do themselves.
Growing up, did you always dream that you would be doing what you’re doing now?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. My father has owned his business for more than 30 years, so the thought of being a small business owner never seemed terrifying, but I knew it was hard work. While I never expected my business to be solely online, it’s turned out to be extremely gratifying and enjoyable!
What made you decide to “go for it” in terms of your career goals/ambitions?
I’ve always been a planner. But blogging was different, I simply jumped in. And that was probably the best decision I made! If I had spent so much time planning on how to make my blog perfect before launch, well… launch probably would’ve never happened!
When I started blogging I knew almost nothing with monetizing it. More than a year into blogging and I am loving how it’s become an income stream and is unlimited in capacity. It’s perfect for my life, right now.
Did you face adversity? How did you overcome that?
My biggest struggle was with myself. I was so incredibly nervous about writing and sharing my advice to other busy moms. I felt like a fraud, like who is going to listen to a mom who is too busy, wouldn’t they rather listen to moms who have everything working perfectly for them? I overcame that negative thinking my acknowledging to myself that I had something valuable to say. There was value in sharing realistic and attainable projects because inevitably, I was talking to a younger version of myself. That younger version was looking for easier ways to run her life at home, feel fulfilled, and actually enjoy Pinterest projects!
A lot of women have these big goals & big ideas that they’d like to bring to life, what advice would you give them in terms of how they can make that happen?
Be confident in your abilities! My biggest advice is to avoid trying to master-it-all on the business side. I recommend becoming proficient in one area of social media before trying to dominate every social media network. Growing slowly, but deliberately isn’t harmful, it helps you achieve attainable goals. For me, achieving small goals helps motivate me and keeps me blogging, even when I feel exhausted. Also, seek out those who are interesting and succeeding, learn from them. I’ve found bloggers to be extremely friendly!
What’s the biggest regret you have when it comes to your blog/shop/business?
My biggest regret over the past 16 months is that I didn’t invest more in my blogging business in the beginning. I treaded lightly for the first 8-10 months. Every day I tried to learn something new but was spinning my wheels.
If I had planned my blog as a business and created a business plan, I would’ve sought out more educational learning. I’ve invested heavily in the past 6 months and it’s been a total game changer. I wish I would’ve done it earlier in the process…
What’s been your proudest moment so far?
Self-publishing my eBook ‘Your Life Made Easy.’ It feels like such an accomplishment to take an idea and plan & execute it into something real! I loved the product, marketing, and behind the scenes work of getting a product to market.
And, just because we like our coffee around here, how do you take yours?
Cold Brew with a touch of cream and toffee nut flavoring 🙂
