IMPORTANT info on Genesis Update

I wanted to send a really quick email about some really IMPORTANT information!  Please please read this post in it’s entirety.

Yesterday the team at CopyBlogger/Studiopress released a new update for the Genesis Framework for version 2.1.3.  You MUST update your site to this new version BEFORE the release of WordPress 4.3 that will be dropping in about a week. Failing to do so may result in losing some taxonomy term meta data, like certain SEO data or settings.

How do I update to the latest version of the Genesis Framework?

Great question! It’s actually VERY easy!

Login to your WP dashboard and you will see a message at the very top of your screen like this:

You’re going to hit the “update now” button and then it will give you a popup to verify that you do in fact want to update it.  Agree to that and it will then update for you.  Once it completes you’ll hit the button to complete the upgrade.  Then you’re all set and ready to roll once WP 4.3 drops next week!

For a full list of changes in this latest version of Genesis you can see that here.

If you are having any trouble with this, please come over and submit a ticket and we will do our very best to get you taken care of!

    1. After we posted this we realized there was an issue that some people are having with not seeing the update just yet. The Studiopress team is looking into it and should have a solution soon.

You are welcome to wait for this update to be pushed out to everyone or you can update manually which I’ve provided detailed instructions for below. The key here is to make sure you have Genesis updated before you do the WP 4.3 update next week (supposed to release 8/18).

In the meantime, you are welcome to do a manual upgrade. Here is how to do this:

Go to the Studiopress.com site and download a fresh new copy of Genesis 2.1.3
Go to Appearance>Themes in your dashboard and turn on any theme in there outside of the Genesis framework or any genesis child theme. Your website will switch over for just a moment when doing this.
Then click on the Genesis Framework (Theme Details) and hit the delete button in the bottom right hand corner.
Now click the Add New button at the top and upload the new Genesis theme files that you just downloaded from the Studiopress site.

      1. Thanks so much for sharing these instructions!!! I didn’t get the notice in my dashboard. I’m so grateful that you notified me of the needed update via email, otherwise I wouldn’t have known I needed to update Genesis BEFORE WordPress. I LOVE your customer service!!!

        1. Thank you so much Jennifer! We love helping all of our customers get things set up and working properly. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have anymore questions!

  1. Thanks for your response. Going to the Studiopress site and downloading a new version of Genesis, well wouldn’t that require me to have purchased it from them vs you? I don’t have access to the customer portal so I’m just a little confused on where I find the updated version to download.

    Thanks!

    1. Elizabeth, you purchase the child theme here on our site, but the actual Genesis Framework should have been purchased over at Studiopress.com. If you received a copy of the Genesis Framework with another child theme purchase elsewhere, then this would mean you don’t own your own license for it. So in times like this, you’ll certainly want to own your own copy!

  2. Unfortunately, I installed the WP update before installing the Genesis update. I cannot access Genesis support, as my web developer installed everything and I do not have access to the account he signed up with on StudioPress. What can I do now? I’m afraid to install the Genesis update. I wish they would have added this detail in the email they sent me about the update. Then this never would have happened.

    1. Hi Darlene,

I would get in touch with your original developer and have them help you update Genesis! If that developer is no longer available, you will need to go ahead and purchase your own license for the Genesis Framework so you can have access to it.

  3. Hai,

I stopped receiving updates from Genesis from last 6 months. I don’t know what’s wrong with my site. Can you help me. I’m manually updating my framework now.

    1. Amar, I would temporarily turn on another theme that doesn’t require the Genesis Framework, then delete the Genesis theme itself and reinstall. This should fix the problem unless you have a setting wrong somewhere.
