Today marks 7 years to the day that I purchased this domain and began this crazy and awesome journey to business ownership and running this amazing site! I wanted to take this opportunity and share a little of the story about how this all began, and the challenges that came along in the beginning to make this dream a reality for me and my family. Be sure to read to the end for a chance to win a Restored 316 theme!
We had no money in the bank and no paycheck or money source for our future. Just two years prior we had gotten married! We were both working crazy retail hours and very rarely saw each other. After we married, we did the typical thing most people do and we bought a house with dreams of starting a family. After a year in our house and another year of working retail hours we were fed up. We wanted out of the rat race. We wanted more for our future family and we wanted to be home with our children.
I decided first to leave my job working customer service at a popular wireless carrier. A month later we discovered we were expecting our first little one. With so much excitement we had some big decisions to make about our future. We decided to go ahead and put our house back on the market and lower all our monthly expenses to as low as possible so we could begin the journey to self employment and be home with our new bundle of joy. A month after listing our house we moved into a tiny one bedroom apartment. My husband continued working for a few more months and then decided to come home shortly before the birth of our daughter. At that time we had absolutely no idea what we were going to do specifically. We had absolutely no income and no money sitting in savings. All we knew at the time was we had a determination to be home with our children and we were going to do whatever it took. Whatever that was.
We spent the next year weathering the storm or having next to nothing. There were times we had little food in our fridge or pantry. There were times we had no gas in the car. There was a time we had a knock at the door with an eviction notice unless a certain amount was paid. Through each situation somehow God provided every penny we needed. I have no idea how it all happened. We would be completely out of food and I would get a phone call from my mother in law to meet her outside and we were going grocery shopping unexpectedly and without us even saying a word about our situation.
When our daughter was about 6 months old I started doing digital scrapbooking to remember all her cute little moments and pictures. In this process I began discovering blogs and saw some that were designed like a digital scrapbook and thought I could totally do that. I remembered taking a website class in high school and I loved it. I began by opening NotePad on my very old PC computer and viewing the source code structure of websites on the web and reading lots of articles on coding. Slowly but surely it all started to click and I began offering free blog designs on blogger to portfolio build. I also began offering premade website templates for ecommerce websites. It took about 6 months of connecting with other bloggers to start getting a consistent workflow but since then, business has never stopped. I’ve had a waiting list a year long at one point and have gone through several stages in my business to truly discover what I love the most, and what works best to fit our family.
In hindsight those two years of struggling to just keep a roof over our heads and food on our plates were so so so hard but honestly I think it was exactly where we needed to be in order to have the determination to make the lifestyle we wanted happen. When we were both working retail it was easy to get caught in the every day routine and remain comfortable with where we were. But staying would have kept us in the rat race we didn’t want to be in any longer.
Sometimes it takes making some really uncomfortable decisions to reach the goal you have set forth before you. I’m not saying you should quit your job tomorrow because that may not be the right move for you. But putting yourself in an uncomfortable position sometimes gives you the absolute determination you need to see it all through.
Get determined and make your big God dreams become a reality!
